Winter Walk
£25.00 – £35.00
This is a simple piece written for the CSD Brass Band, which stands for Cambridge and Surrounding District. My old pal Chris Lawrence is the conductor, and they rehearse in a lovely old church in the town. Having been to a rehearsal (for another piece of mine) I decided to write them one of their own. The letters C, S and D are all musical notes. S, in musical terms, is another name for Eb, so there was my starting block: the notes C, Eb and D. The block turned into a gentle walk in the snow, or just the cold, in a park or a field; outdoors somewhere. I couldn’t write a piece with entirely woolly-jumper harmony, so there are wintery edges to help depict the scene, especially at the beginning with flurries of snow and cold wind. But ultimately it’s a reassurer, a comforter, a warm piece for a cold day. The addition of glock and vibraphone were afterthoughts and are entirely optional, as so many bands won’t have these instruments available.
